Volunteer

We are excited to be welcoming volunteers to Sequoia for the first time! To begin with, we will be taking on volunteers to run ‘Peer Social Groups’, however more roles may become available in the future.

What is a Peer Social Group?

The Peer Social Groups will be open to everyone who is currently accessing help with Sequoia and those who have done so previously. They will give people an opportunity to participate in fun activities, outside of a therapeutic or support-based space and build confidence and connections with one another. They will also ensure that people in their three-month consolidation period still have a set time to meet with other members of the Sequoia community.

What are my responsibilities?

As a Volunteer Peer Social Group Facilitator, you and your fellow volunteers will help to organise and run the social groups. This will involve choosing which activities you want to run (a coffee afternoon, a walking group, a choir, a gardening group etc.), identifying what resources you will need and facilitating these sessions so that everyone feels involved, safe and comfortable.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is a wonderful way to gain confidence and a greater sense of purpose as well as allowing you to have fun and connect with others. Whilst volunteering, you will also develop transferable skills, experience and knowledge which can be useful when applying for other opportunities. We welcome anybody who is interested to consider volunteering- you do not need to have a specific set of skills or qualifications; you just need to be yourself. Whilst your experiences are unique to you, the wisdom, empathy and passion you have gained throughout your journey can inspire and comfort those who are living with CEN/PD.

Important things to note:

  • You will be asked to complete 2 mandatory online training modules as well as attend a group online induction session which will last X hours.

  • You will never be left to run a group alone and will always work with at least 1 other volunteer or member of staff.

  • You do not have to commit to running a group for a certain number of hours a week- if you only have time to host a group once a fortnight/month, this is absolutely fine.
  • As this is a new element being introduced to Sequoia, we cannot accept an unlimited number of volunteers. If we can’t offer you a role at this time, we can absolutely keep you in mind for future opportunities.
  • Before being offered a role, you will be asked to attend a very chilled discussion so that we can make sure we can accommodate you and that the role is a good fit.
  • A DBS check is required for this role. If you are worried about this, please reach out with any questions, as this should not be a barrier to getting involved.
